About
Founded in 2004, the Britannia Naval Research Association is a group which collectively and actively aims to preserve, promote, and research our global naval heritage.
We focus on armed and organised nautical activity, sea power, technology, events, characters and closely related themes from the Elizabethan period and earlier to the present day.
From Drake to Dreadnought and beyond...
We are an independent body that recognises the dangers of losing our naval heritage and rich naval influence. We seek to redress the balance by offering a fresh, innovative approach and voice to raising the awareness and importance of naval matters.
We are backed by the action and expertise that we bring together as an integrated group of artefact collectors, historians/researchers and museum curators, naval and maritime professionals, amateur sailors and shipwrights.
Our diverse but complementary membership and shared passion for researching, preserving and promoting naval heritage is channelled into specific special projects and action groups to make change happen.
Our Aims
To preserve…
We work to conserve and maintain all aspects of our naval heritage for future generations, from artefacts and physical relics to traditions and the spoken word. We support the ownership and safekeeping of artefacts and documents related to naval issues through our network of collectors. We also acquire and share knowledge of naval history and, as custodians, preserve it via our living experts within the Association and special projects devoted to preservation, promotion and research.
To promote…
One of our aims is to raise awareness of naval exploits, artefacts and heritage. Of prime concern is to educate the public about the importance of the navy and to speak publicly to promote and preserve naval artefacts and history. We also develop and advertise our naval knowledge base via multimedia formats. We are active in sharing and growing our expertise, passion and knowledge via our regular newsletter, journals, books, presentations, events and special projects.
To research…
A key aim of the Association is to investigate and document relevant aspects of naval history and heritage. We are developing knowledge bases and panels of expertise and best practice to extend naval research via factual, reasoned argument and investigation. We seek to work in conjunction with other institutions and organisations to ensure knowledge is retained and developed for future generations.
